Getting Started/FAQs
Welcome to the Online Quidditch League! If you're here, you're probably wondering how to play or what sort of programs and such you need to get started. While this isn't comprehensive, it should cover the basics you need to hit the ground running. For more specific questions, you may also want to take a look at our Manuals page. If you have any questions not answered here, feel free to ask any of us on the chat.
Getting Connected - mIRC and Broomrider

Installing mIRC (Windows) mIRC is a internet relay chat client that is used to connect to our chat and run the scripts that allow you to play OQL. Click here to download mIRC 6.35. After installing and starting it up, just hit continue to get past the prompt - don't worry about the expiration as you can still use it past the evaluation period, though it'll delay the continue button afterwards.  Upon opening you should get a popup showing some connection information. The goal is to get it to look like mine so you can connect to our server. Go down to Servers to set this up.  Basically, if you set up your connection details like the above and go back to connect, you should be able to connect to our server! Type /join #quidditchpitch once connected to join our main channel.  Note that if you press the second button from the left on the top bar (the hammer), you'll get back into those options - explore around and make sure everything is to your liking, such as IRC settings like auto-rejoin or Messages settings like custom quits, etc. |

Loading the Broomrider (needs mIRC) The Broomrider is the core script for OQL players, and is used for the command inputs for all players in games and pickups. You can download it here or via the Downloads section on the side.  To load this, hit Alt-R to open the scripts editor, then hit the Remote tab then Alt-L to load the script into the remotes. Once done, your screen should match the above. |

What do I need to play OQL? You will need to download mIRC and Broomrider, both of which can be found in the Downloads page of the site. Follow the instructions on the Downloads page to setup both mIRC and Broomrider. mIRC is free - it says you only have a 30 day trial but you are still able to use it afterwards. The server we connect on is irc.mugglenet.com. |

How does OQL work? OQL games are managed by what we call a Refbot, which is a script that basically runs the game. It distinguishes who has the quaffle, who has the bludger, if there was a score/block, snitch catches, etc. As it is a script, there is no lag from the commands it sends and it is 99.9% accurate. This is what makes OQL different from other attempts at text-based Quidditch: it actually works and is based highly on skill and little on luck. |

How long are games? Games are around half an hour-one and a half hours long, depending on the skill of the team and the seekers. Rarely will it go beyond 1 1/2 hours. To see some past games, visit the Archives page. |

What's Backyard OQL? Backyard OQL is the term given to OQL played without a seeker. That means games are completely based on skill and not an ounce of luck is present. Backyard OQL games also usually last on average an hour. |
